چکیده

‘‘And now here it was again, now grown, now in its new home.’’ In her book Resilience, Elizabeth Edwards recalls what raced through her mind when she learned that her cancer had come back and had metastasized. After surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, she thought that the cancer ‘‘had been chased away.’’ How does cancer find a new home and become metastatic? The short answer is simple: it is complicated. As cancer forms and develops, some cancer cells manage to be disseminated from the primary tumor, travel through the circulatory system, and infiltrate and colonize distant organs, eventually forming clinically detectable metastasis. Given the complexity of the metastatic process and technical and experimental bottlenecks, systematically investigating metastasis has been challenging, and to this date, metastatic cancer also remains largely incurable and fatal. Nevertheless, with the availability of more pathophysiologically relevant disease models and technological advances in areas such as imaging and single-cell sequencing, recent studies are beginning to paint a clearer picture. Why does cancer come back as metastatic in some patients after the primary tumor has been successfully removed? The answer might have to do with the timing of metastatic dissemination. Earlier data from several tumor types already suggest that, contrary to more conventional thinking, dissemination can occur rather early during cancer development, but the mechanism of early dissemination is unknown. A pair of studies now offers important clues as to how this happens in breast cancer (Hosseini et al., 2016; Harper et al., 2016). Using a Her2-driven breast cancer mouse model, Housseini et al. and Harper et al. provide evi-

Association between Slip Severity and Muscle Synergies of Slipping

Falls impose significant negative impacts to the US population and economy. A significant number of falls may be prevented via appropriate slip-responses since a strong relation exists between slips and falls. More importantly, as severe slips are more prone to result in a fall, identifying severe slippers along with the responsible factors for their adverse motor control and severe slipping sh...

Generalized Extended State Observer Approach to Robust Tracking Control for Wheeled Mobile Robot with Skidding and Slipping

This paper proposes a robust tracking controller based on a Generalized Extended State Observer (GESO) method for a wheeled mobile robot (WMR) with unknown skidding and slipping. Skidding and slipping of a WMR are inevitable in practice. We regard skidding and slipping as disturbances and modify the dynamics model to consider them simply. Then, we adopt the GESO to design...

Shared and Task-Specific Muscle Synergies during Normal Walking and Slipping

Falling accidents are costly due to their prevalence in the workplace. Slipping has been known to be the main cause of falling. Understanding the motor response used to regain balance after slipping is crucial to developing intervention strategies for effective recovery. Interestingly, studies on spinalized animals and studies on animals subjected to electrical microstimulation have provided ma...

Stabilization of the Classical Shimmying Wheel

Many vehicle systems contain rolling elements which exhibit unstable rolling motion, called shimmying, which may lead to disastrous results. The classical shimmying wheel is a simple model which captures the essential dynamics of such systems. Fortunately, this model possesses a particular geometric structure which provides a simple means to design a globally stabilizing controller. However, th...
